Minoxidil General Information
Minoxidil (generic name: minoxidil; brand names include: Regaine / Morr) is a vasodilator medication known for its ability to slow or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth in both men and women.
Minoxidil is used as a long-term treatment for common baldness.
Minoxidil is the first and only FDA-approved topical treatment that is clinically proven to regrow hair. Minoxidil also helps to reverse the progression of hereditary hair loss.
Minoxidil is the #1 dermatologist-recommended brand for hair regrowth.
In hereditary hair loss, a combination of heredity, hormones, and age causes a progressive shrinking, or miniaturization, of certain scalp follicles. This causes a shortening of the hair's growing cycle. Over time, as the active growth phase becomes shorter, the resting phase becomes longer. Eventually, there may be no growth at all. Researchers believe that Minoxidil works in part by partially enlarging the hair follicles and reversing the miniaturization process. By enlarging miniaturized follicles, the growth phase of the hair cycle is prolonged, allowing the hair to become longer and thicker looking. And with more follicles in the growth phase at the same time, it is possible to see improved coverage of the scalp.
Minoxidil is available in 60 ml bottles containing either 2% or 5% minoxidil topical solution.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Use Minoxidil exactly as directed.
Minoxidil must only be applied when the hair and scalp are completely dry.
Apply one dose (1mL) of Minoxidil to the hair loss area of your scalp two times a day, preferably morning and night. Massage the solution lightly into your scalp, and wash your hands well afterwards. This dose should be used no matter what the size of the bald spot is.
Response to treatment with Minoxidil may vary widely, and some patients may see faster results than others.
Men may see results as early as 2 months, but most men and women see results in 4 months. Your results and success may depend on proper application and dosage.
Continued use of Minoxidil is needed to maintain hair regrowth.
You may follow your normal hair care routine when using Minoxidil. However, you should apply Minoxidil first and wait for it to dry before applying your styling products.
If you forget to use Minoxidil once or twice, just start your twice daily application again and return to your usual schedule. Do not apply more than 1mL of Minoxidil and do not use it more than twice daily to make up for the dose you missed.
Keep the solution in a cool place. Minoxidil is flammable, and must be kept away from heat, sparks and naked flames.
Before using Minoxidil, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you do not have a family history of hair loss; your hair loss is sudden and/or unexplained;
you have any heart problems;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
